Finding My Perfect Ballet Skirt: A Journey of Dance and Self-Expression

Hello everyone! I’m Sabrina Rina—yes, that’s why I go by Ryna. As an Italian professional dancer, I’ve spent years honing my craft, and here I am in 2024, still dancing at the beautiful Teatro Massimo in Palermo. While my passion for dance remains strong, there’s another love I’ve developed over the years: sewing.

My journey into the world of fabrics and threads began 11 years ago, driven by a personal need to express myself and my style, as well as the practical desire to cover my bottom during ballet classes and auditions 😊. Finding the right ballet skirt has always been a challenge for me. I struggled to find one that fit my body and style. Like many of you, I often felt self-conscious about my appearance in class. I needed a skirt that wouldn’t just cover me up but would also make me feel confident and comfortable.

For a whole year, I experimented—trying countless designs and cuts in search of the perfect ballet skirt. The market offered options that were often too boring, too wavy, or overly voluminous, making me feel larger than I am. The ideal skirt needed to have that essential quality: it should flatter the dancer’s body, making us look taller and slimmer, while providing the right balance between front and back.

Through countless trials, I finally crafted a design that meets these needs. It lays beautifully without creating unwanted bulk around the hips, just like you can see on these girls. The moment I put on that perfect skirt, it felt like magic.

What I’ve learned is that a ballet skirt is not just an accessory; it can serve as a security blanket or a tool to help embody our roles on stage. More importantly, it allows us to embrace our bodies, imperfections and all. Remember, you always have a choice in how you present yourself, but you deserve to feel good about what you wear.

So here’s to all the dancers out there: let’s celebrate our bodies, our art, and the power of finding what makes us feel beautiful. You are worthy of good things, both on and off the stage.

With love and fabric,
Ryna
